For Reading Out Loud

The book mobile is my favorite recreational vehicle.  My grandma and I would walk three blocks every other Saturday to the book mobile.  I loved it especially when it was raining!  My grandma's love for reading was not deterred by any weather.  I can still hear the steady sound of rain drops on the umbrella, stopping and studying the wiggling worms on the sidewalk, stepping in every puddle and of course avoiding all those cracks, because every one knows that if you step on one you will break your grandma's back!

Horton Hatches the Egg

Picture
I don't think I have met a Dr. Seuss book that I didn't like, but Horton Hatches the Egg is my all time favorite.  I have read this book so many times I can recite it by heart.  My oldest child, Terry can too.  He reads this to his daughter now.  My grandma used to take me to the book mobile on Saturdays and this was the book that I would always pick!  You and your family will love this!

Paul Revere's Ride

Picture
This is a classic that every library should have.  Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is one of my favorite poets.  After reading this, he'll be one of yours too!  Your heart will beat faster, as you go along the freedom trail of Paul Revere's ride.  The emotional and beautiful illustrations of Charles Santore will draw you into the story as if you are really there.  The detail of the British army's red coats and the strain drawn into their faces is truly amazing.  Your children will truly enjoy learning, hearing and seeing the beginning of the founding of our country.

O Sullivan Stew

Picture
O'Sullivan Stew is a delightful book that you will read over and over again.  Irish folk lore is one of my favorite kind of reads because   there is no predicting the ending.  O' Sullivan Stew is no exception to this rule.  The characters are typical Irish in physical depiction and attitude.  It is the ending that matters most in any Irish tale.  Truth be told (or not!) it is a fun and exciting book, that will leave you wanting  a sequel.  Don't be surprised if you are talking in an Irish accent for the rest of the day.

The Napping House

Picture
If you whisper while reading this book, you will calm your kiddos into a cozy nap.  Works for me every time - I fall asleep! Then my children get up and get into peanut butter and potato chips.  This wonderful book is beautifully illustrated and as each page is turned, you can see the colors change from a cozy, dark, & stormy room to sun filled delight.  My kids love to follow with me and read the repetitious story line.  Audrey and Don Wood have written other delightful books like King Biggood's in the Bathtub and Heckedy Peg.

Pink and Say

Picture
I can not say enough about this inspiring and emotional book!  Every library must have this one. The setting of this book is the Civil War.  A young white boy, named Say, fighting for the Union, was wounded and saved by a young black boy, named Pink,  who was also fighting for the Union.  Pink carried Say to his mother's home, where she nursed him back to health.  This is a touching, up close and personal story of one of the many warriors of the Civil War.  The story  will  touch you and all you read it to deeply and profoundly.

Madeline's Rescue

Picture
No little girl's library would be complete with out Madeline.  This series of books plays to the heroine in all little girls. I love the subtle rhyming and soft illustrations. We have enjoyed these books for 15 years and look forward to enjoying them for at least 15 more. About 10 years ago I purchased Miss Clavel and the other Madeline dolls for my girls. They are the best quality-made dolls we have ever owned.  Of course they are a little worn after being played with by my four girls, but they are still loved and enjoyed, even by my 15 year old.

Horton Hears a Who

Picture
Horton the elephant said it all - "A person's a person no matter how small." This is a perfect book to start your children on the
pro-life path.  A simple message set to the rhyming genius of Dr. Seuss.

Olivia

Picture
My daughter is named Olivia, and so of course, I had to buy a book with her name on it.  She was sure that  this little precocious pig was named for her and she wasn't so sure that she appreciated it.

Lost and Found

Picture
Oliver Jeffers writes wonderfully sweet books.  Simple and quick to read.  You will linger on the pages because the illustrations are so sweet and tug on your heart.  Your little ones will  encourage you to keep reading and remind you to turn the page, because they will love these books more than we do.

The Way Back Home

Sam and the Firefly

Picture
P.D.Eastman has a simple and fun way of putting life manners into perspective.  This is one of my favorites along with Go Dog Go and Are you my Mother.  My Sam thinks this is a book made just for him.  It is fun for me to let him think so.

There's A Nightmare In My Closet

Picture
This is a book you will wear out.  Especially if you have 10 kids.  I recommend the hard cover edition!

The Man in the Moon

Picture
This Christmas, Santa brought the little guys a wonderful new book for their library.  The Man in the Moon, by William Joyce, is a delightful, good versus evil, good prevails book.  The illuminated illustrations will have you turning page after page with your eyes combing corner to corner taking in the beautiful colors and extravagantly detailed pictures.   Let's face it, a child's book has to be as delightful for you to read as it is delightful for your children's senses.

For the big kids

That Printer of Udel

Picture
This book will lead you through a time of heart ache and pain,  when people struggled everyday just to provide the basic needs of living.  I bought this book on the recommendation of President Ronald Reagan.  He said this book helped form his conscience to that of being a man of action and optimism.  This wonderful book paints a beautiful picture of Christianity in action. At the same time, it illustrates that living a shallow faith life damages and leaves the down- trodden behind and harms the church as a whole.  It shows the pain behind one person's actions and the grace behind the actions of another. This hope-filled book will help you see life and humanity through the eyes of One who sees the whole picture. Read it more than once.

Angel Horses

Picture
This book is about the spiritual relationship between man and horses.  My daughter, Isabel, loves this book.  It is broken down into four chapters of true stories.  Love and Dreams, Health and Healing, Courage and Endurance, and Spiritual Connection and the After Life.  This will help bring awareness of the gifts of our Creator and how we are connected to these gifts for our own benefit.  It is further proof of how much God truly loves us and wants us to experience His love in His beautiful, graceful creature, the horse.

Chronicles of Narnia

Picture
The Magician's Nephew is my kids favorite Chronicle.  This book lays the foundation for all the others.  It explains the magic of Narnia and how you get there.  A must read for those who love The Chronicles of Narnia.

The Hunger Games

Picture
My daughters love this series.  I haven't read it yet, but I am definitely intrigued.  They talk and talk about them.  We did buy the movie and I am waiting for the moment to be able to sit and watch the whole thing.  I have to admit, the bits and pieces that I have seen, have my mind reeling with the thought of,  "I should have read this book before I let my 10 year old read it".  The movie seems violent and something that I would need to walk through with her.
